A Letter of Introduction from Mrs. V

Dear Parents:
Welcome to another exciting new year at Mary Ellen Henderson!  Our goal is to make this a successful and productive
one for all!  Let me introduce myself.  My name is Lynn Varshneya and I will be your child’s support teacher throughout the school year, which may include Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and/or Basic Skills classes, in a resource room or in a cotaught general education classroom.
Although this is my third year at Mary Ellen Henderson
Middle School I am not new to education!  I have taught in a
variety of settings throughout my 30 year career as a teacher.
I have a Master of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Special Education from San Diego State University and hold credentials in multiple subjects (K-8) as well as all areas of special need.
I am thrilled to be teaching again in such a wonderful district as Falls Church City!  In the past, I have made it my goal to be supportive to all those who influence a student’s education, including and foremost the child, their parents, and their teachers.
I will continue to keep this in the forefront as I believe every student will realize their optimum achievement level when, as a team, we maximize their strengths for learning.
I also believe good communication is key in facilitating the educational process and I encourage you to contact me any time
you may have any questions, comments or concerns.  You may
reach me during school hours at 703-720-5758 or e-mail me at varshneyal@fccps.org.  I check my messages and e-mail frequently and try to respond by the end of the school day.
Again, I am looking forward to working with you and your student together for a successful school year!

                    Sincerely,

Homework Tips for Parents

1. Show an interest in your child's homework assignments. Ask about the subjects and the work to be done.
2. Be a role model -- take the opportunity to read a book or newspaper while your child studies. Reading together helps create a learning atmosphere.
3. Teach your child how to be organized. Be sure he or she keeps a homework assignment book.
4. Eliminate as many distractions as possible during study time.
5. Develop a strategy for dealing with homework. Find a plan that works for your family and stick with it.
6. Try to relate the homework to your child's everyday life. For instance, fractions and measurements can be learned as the child prepares a favorite food.
7. Encourage your child to establish a regular time to do homework. Developing a schedule might help avoid procrastination.
8. Meet with your child's teacher to discuss the nature of the approach to reading, spelling and other topics that your child is being taught.
9. Make sure your child has a specific place to do homework that offers ample lighting, minimal noise and plenty of work space.
10. Praise your child for successfully completing homework. Nothing builds self-esteem like praise from parents.
